Note: This workshop was originally scheduled for April 3rd. See updated details details below.
In this 2-part workshop you will learn how to find stars and constellations using your outstretched hands and fingers as tools to measure distances across the sky. This type of ‘beginning astronomy’ is a very ‘hands-on’ and a fun way to reveal some of the mysteries of the night sky. You will learn how to find a few of the brightest stars and a few constellations and you may even be able to view your own zodiac sign constellation!
Flashlights that produce red light are required, as well as super warm clothing (multiple layers). A blanket and waterproof ground cloth or a comfortable folding chair from which you can safely lean back and look up are optional. Binoculars are also optional, but highly recommended if you have them.
Part 1: 30 Minute Zoom Meeting - April 11th at 6:40 pm
The workshop will begin with a 30-minute Zoom meeting at 6:40 pm on Tuesday, April 11. We will view slides of, and discuss the basic techniques and tools we will use ‘in the field’. Zoom link and all supporting documents will be emailed to all registered participants ahead of time. It is recommended that you print the documents and have them available for the outdoor, star-watching session.
Part 2 – Outdoor Star Watching Session (See notes below for date)
We hope that ‘stars will align’ (or more accurately, the weather will allow) for the actual workshop to immediately follow the Zoom meeting on Tuesday, April 11th. After the Zoom meeting we will all meet at a darkish open field (location to be confirmed, possibly Portlock Park) to arrive at twilight (about 8:00 pm). Please note: If the clouds/sky are not cooperative on April 11th, then we will postpone the outdoor star watching session until April 12th or 13th. This will be confirmed during the Zoom meeting.
Registration: As this event is limited to 18 people we recommend you register by emailing naturesaltspring@gmail.com and include the names of all members you are registering.
